How to Keep Your Water Softener in Good Working Condition

plumberchatswood water softenerWater softener systems are great aids when you are in a community that is supplied with hard water. This equipment helps in removing minerals found in water that can wreak havoc on your plumbing system and appliances that require the use of water to work. Once these minerals build up in the fixtures and piping in your home, they can cause clogs in them. Although there are a variety of water softeners in today’s market, they still function in the same manner. Each version is unique, giving you the service that you need in your home. But if you want to keep your water softener in a good working condition, here are a few tips that you could perform;

1. Know its facts by reading the manual and being aware of the warranty.

Before dismantling your water softener, read the manual first. The manual provided by the manufacturer of the equipment contains detailed instructions on what you should do first when you want to clean it on your own. Every manual is different from each other if the equipment comes from different manufacturers. Also, you have to thoroughly read the manual for you know about the product’s warranty as there will be conditions that you will need to follow so that the warranty can be verified.

2. Perform a routine of cleaning the tanks.

High-quality water softeners don’t need heavy cleaning but they do need to be cleaned at least once a year so as to keep mineral deposits from building up. Cleaning the tank of a water softener is not an easy task and it can be done hastily, too. You need to have ample time to make sure that your actions are not in a rush so as not to damage the tank’s components. You should be careful when you are removing the parts of the water softener as some of them are fragile and can easily break when mishandled.

3. Keep the salt level above the minimum.

The required salt level in the different kinds of water softeners varies a lot. That is why you have to read the manual so that you will know how much salt you should maintain in the tanks of your water softener. Keep the salt level of the softener just a little bit above the minimum. In that way, there will be no chance of too much salt or too little.

4. Remove any signs of salt build-ups.

Once the tank acquires salt build-ups, remove them immediately. This can interrupt the process of the water softener and usually cause problems to the service of the equipment. You can scrape off the build-ups with just a broom handle or any object that has a long handle. However, if the build-up goes on and on, then you will have to clean the entire tank.

5. Use compatible water softener cleaners.

When cleaning your water softener, make sure the cleaners you are using are compatible with the model of the product. Although most standard models require cleaning every 4 to 6 months, some require longer. If your cleaner is compatible with the water softener, then you won’t have a problem cleaning the resin bed and brine tank.
